Ayn Thor – 2025’s Latest Handheld Emulation Station Impressions

The AYN Thor had been the most anticipated handheld console of 2025 when it released towards the end of the year. To be completely honest with you, I had my doubts on the system simply because hearing of a dual screen handheld packing with OLED screens was unheard of. The only reason I actually knew about it was due to the iiSU presentation later that same year. I picked one up for myself and OtakuReborn and fell deeply in-love with it. It's such a beautiful system and wanted to share my thoughts on it, as well as it's Emulation capabilities!

Out of the box, the system is neatly packaged into a relatively small box. I went with the Pro Edition, which gives me the 8Gen2 12 RAM + 256GBs of storage. More than enough for what I plan on using it for. Even if this can run up to Nintendo Switch games, I felt it was unneeded since a lot of the games I tend to play are retro, so testing it out on an emulation front was definitely something I anticipated doing more anyways. One of my bigger focus' is doing RetroAchievements!

The system uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU, one of the latest components incorporated into recent AYN models, a fully customized Full HD 6' AMOLED Touch Screen and a 3.92' Touch Screen Display that is also AMOLED. Sporting Android 13, a 6000mAH Battery and Hall Sticks! Those last two are particularly important for me. I want the system to last a while before I need to charge, and I don't want the system's sticks to start drifting any time soon either.

Booted up the system and immediately installed the front-end of choice I wanted to use. iiSU is currently is still a big work in progress, and I rather have something that works and has what I need. I went with Console Launcher, which incorporates a 3DS / PSP like feel with customization options if you fork out 5 bucks, which isn't a bad deal considering all that you can do with it. It feels great, haven't had any issues with it other than sometimes it can potentially lose location to your ROMs, which is an easy fix. Still annoying but nothing remotely serious in my personal opinion.

Overall, I feel the system is pretty good and I haven't had too many problems thus far with it. It runs all the games I need and want. Retroachievements make it a lot more fun to play through as well, and my hope is I get a lot more usage over a period of time when I'm not streaming. (I need to play more games outside of streaming for once haha.)
